I started reading it today and I find it very difficult to understand why the people were so excited to see umm that president guy.....i forgot his name
Matthew Harrison Brady is a nationally-famous politician and public speaker. He is also a deeply religious man and has often spoken publicly about religion. The people are excited to see him not only because of his fame, but because they believe he can help convict Mr. Cates.
Why exactly are the people of Hillsboro so against this Cates fellow? I was absent yesterday but I'm guessing they are just the stereotypical, narrow-minded, small town folk whose laws are derived directly from the bible and who despise anyone who tries to incorporate new systems of beliefs into their supposedly stable foundation.
Their anger with/disdain for Mr. Cates is certainly out of proportion to his alleged "crime." Then again, look at things from their point of view. Mr. Cates is an avatar for something they find profoundly threatening. The question is, why do they find science threatening?
Science is threatening to these people because it challenges the bible. It challenges this closed system. Colonel Brady seems eager to denounce science as a blasphemous falsehood, because anything that challenges this closed system challenges Mr. Brady's power/authority. this leads to Brady Stigmatizing all that is Darwin-related. There is also a fear of Hillsboro's God. Their God seems very hateful of dissent, or freedom of thought.
*at least that's my theory.
